The teachers and students assembled at 9.00 a.m. in the ground floor multipurpose hall of the college campus. A private bus was arranged to pick up the students at 10:00 a.m. Attendance was taken and group photograph outside the college campus. The bus took the Atal Setu to reach JNPT. It was the first time that the group was driving through the impressive Atal Sethu that connected Sewri to Uran. The experience was thrilling. The student leaders Mr. Prashant Pawar of T.Y.B.Com. and Ganga Balotiya of T.Y.B.Com. completed the paper work and security formalities at the Main Building of the JNPT.

The tour guides Mr. Prashant and Mr. Sunil were deputed by JNPT. They instructed the students to remain in the group and observe the happenings silently.

Tour Guide Mr.Prashant gave a brief description and history of JNPT. The bus was stopped at the entrance of the port and asked the students to descend from the bus. The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) at Navi Mumbai (formerly known as the Nhava Sheva Port) is India’s No. 1 container port handling 55% of the container cargo across all major ports in India. Commissioned on 26th May 1989, JNPT occupies a prominent place among the most modern ports in India. It is the second youngest and one of the most modern major ports of the country. Initially, JN Port was planned to be a ‘satellite port’ to the Mumbai Port with a purpose to decongest traffic. In the pre- reform days, Mumbai port faced a lot of issues like shallowness of the channel, congestion on roads and railways through the Mumbai city linking the port to its hinterland, as well as labour problems. The Port’s incapability of handling the expanding volume of modern cargo directed to the west coast, eventually led to JN Port becoming an independent port in 1989.

The students observed keenly the vehicle movement, transport equipment, loading unloading equipment and techniques adopted at the port. It was an impressive sight. The students walked on to see the tall cranes that had grabs to lift loose cargo like grains and pulses. These were remote control operated and the students were keen to understand how they worked. A cargo ship was on the banks and the students were awe-struck by the sheer magnitude of the vessel.

The students took a break for lunch at the JNPT Canteen. After lunch the tour continued. They went to the banks of the sea to see a ship that had arrived and was about to begin with the unloading and loading activities. The students had a lot of questions to ask which were answered by the guides. The JNPT officils took an interview of the student leaders to get feedback from them.

The field trip ended after proposing a vote of thanks to the tour guide Mr. Prashant and Mr. Sunil and the JNPT authorities for the wonderful opportunity to visit the port.
