The IQAC and Department of Commerce in collaboration with Bombay Stock Exchange organized a one-hour specialized session for FYBCOM and SYBCOM students to create awareness about the functioning of the capital market. The primary aim was to educate students about depository services, which allow investors to hold, trade, and manage securities (shares, bonds, mutual funds) in electronic form. Mr. Omkar Parab from SEBI was the resource person for the session.

The key points explained by Mr. Parab were,

  • Introduction to Capital Markets: An overview of primary and secondary markets was provided, explaining how companies raise funds and how investors trade them.
  • Depository System Demystified: The speaker explained that a depository acts like a “bank for securities,” where share certificates are converted into digital form (Demat).
  • The Role of DPs: The distinction between depositories (NSDL/CDSL) and Depository Participants (brokers/banks) was clarified.
  • Safety and Efficiency: Benefits such as elimination of bad delivery risk, speedy transfers, and lower transaction costs were highlighted.
  • Investor Rights & Redressal: Information on how to use SCORES (SEBI Complaints Redress System) to resolve grievances was provided

This one-hour session was effective in providing foundational knowledge of the depository system to B.Com. students. It successfully equipped them with the knowledge required to deal with security transactions in an electronic environment, empowering them to become informed investors.
